YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN...

Posted on: Tue 03 Aug 2010

FOR SOME, education may be left behind the moment they leave the school gates. For others, life is just one long learning curve. Take Roger, for example.

At 98, he is currently the oldest member of the Study Centre's Over 50's computer classes - but as far as this particular student is concerned, age is simply a number. After a varied career, including time as a university teacher, a soldier and later going on to the board of directors at the British Council, Roger now heads to Carrow Road every Wednesday afternoon to gain important IT skills.

"I had been to other computer classes previously and a friend told me about this one," he told canaries.co.uk. "So I thought I'd come and give it a go and I find it absolutely brilliant. I think for people my age, to learn to work a computer is a very good thing - it keeps your mind going.

"I have a computer at home which I use to keep in touch with my children abroad, which is splendid. So to get one's knowledge of how to work a computer up-to-date here is extremely helpful. It's also a very nice social occasion, as there are very nice people here and it's a very good class. Both the teachers are absolutely first class and the equipment is excellent and the place is beautiful. So it becomes a social occasion as well as a learning experience, which is rather fun."

A Norfolk resident since he retired to Costessey in 1972, Roger added he thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Study Centre: "The best thing I've gained from attending the classes here is confidence in working the computers. Perhaps what we learn here is far more sophisticated than I'm ever going to use at home, but to have the knowledge that I know these things increases one's confidence enormously and keeps my mind active."

Maxine Mace, the Study Centre's IT tutor, leads the over 50's computer classes. She told First News: "We've been running over 50's computer classes at Norwich City Study Centre for almost ten years and it has gone from strength to strength with over 120 mature students attending the centre weekly.

"As the name suggests all of the students are aged 50 plus, but at 98, Roger is our oldest student to date. He attends the Wednesday afternoon sessions and every week he leaves with a pleasant 'Thank you so much' and 'I really enjoyed it and have learned such a lot today'. He is a lovely gentlemen and it just goes to show you are never too old to learn."

Asked what he would say to anyone who may think they're too old for an educational hobby, Roger added: "I'm sure they're not too old to learn- if you can get around, for goodness sake get a computer and learn how to use it because it's a very good mental stimulus. I don't believe anyone's ever too old to learn."
