CANARIES REWARD LOCAL CHILDREN

Posted on: Tue 03 Aug 2010

OVER 250 local school children cheered on the Canaries in their recent pre-season friendlies against Newcastle and Everton.

All the youngsters have spent 20 hours at Carrow Road completing a learning support programme called Playing for Success, and as a special reward on completion of their course they received a ticket to come to a pre-season game.

PfS takes place after school in the Norwich City Study Centre, a state of the art 'mini-school' located on the second floor of the Aviva Community Stand. It's a totally unique learning programme using professional football as a resource for teaching fundamental skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

As a result of this three-way partnership between Department for Education, Norfolk County Council and the Football Club, in 10 years 3,000 young people have successfully improved their basic skills thanks to PfS.

The children who attended were from one of the 24 schools that have selected children to take part in PfS since Christmas. Schools represented were Mile Cross Primary, Lionwood Junior, Stalham Junior School and Sprowston High School.

Paul Wickens, Centre Manager said: "We are delighted that the Club has given these tickets as rewards to our students. All of these young people agreed to come to Carrow Road for an additional three hours for six consecutive weeks to take part in further learning activities.

"They are challenged to work hard and push themselves, and they always remain enthusiastic and positive. Providing such a large number of free tickets in this financially uncertain time demonstrates to schools, families and the children themselves how much Norwich City values the efforts and achievements of these young people. I would like to offer our sincerest thanks to the Club for their generosity and support."
