Daniel Farke: We need courage and confidence to pick up three points

24 August 2018

Daniel Farke wants his City team to continue playing with courage and confidence as they meet the early league leaders at Carrow Road tomorrow.

The Canaries will take on Leeds United at 3pm, hot on the heels of their first Sky Bet Championship win of the season in the midweek game against Preston North End.

And Farke wants his team to be at its best to pick up another three points.

“Everyone knows Leeds are the league leaders, with big names even on the bench and an experienced coach and everyone knows how difficult the task will be,” Farke said. “But that doesn’t lower our ambition and we want to be successful tomorrow. We are playing in front of our home fans at Carrow Road and we know we have to play this game with respect but also being highly motivated to win points.

“We know we have to be there at our best with a really good performance and we want the same result we had on Wednesday with three points.”

Farke said his team needs to be flexible in each game to adapt to the different teams they face this season.

He said: “Leeds will be a side that tries to press a lot and work with high intensity on the ball so we need to find some solutions to bypass their pressing. But we also have to play with self confidence, courage and bring our strength onto the pitch and to find a good balance between both of them will be important for tomorrow.

“It’s important that we are flexible enough to bring our strengths on the pitch in the way we want to do it. Sometimes it makes more sense to start with a three-man [defensive] formation so we have different angles in our build-up and we can bring our passing style more on the pitch. Or sometimes there is a crucial player in the opposition that we have to take out of the game and for that we have to change our behaviour. So that is always important in each and every game and Leeds have many strengths we have to keep in mind.”

Farke said Emi Buendia is in his thoughts for the game after making his debut against Preston, but still needs a couple of weeks to be in the physical shape to play the full 90 minutes.

He said: “He can add something special to our game and he can change and influence a game so much. It’s also good to have a player with such an effect that you can bring in, so when we were struggling against Preston he made a decent impact for the last 30 minutes.

“After the international break he will be totally prepared to start."

City beaten by Leeds at Carrow Road

25 August 2018

Norwich City were beaten 3-0 by Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship at Carrow Road.

City began well but were undone by two quickfire first-half goals from Mateusz Klick and Ezgjan Alioski.

Pablo Hernandez added a third in the second-half to succumb City to defeat.

Daniel Farke made two changes to the team which beat Preston North End on Wednesday. Alex Tettey dropped out of the 18-man squad altogether and Tom Trybull replaced him in the heart of the City midfield. The other change saw Ben Marshall swapped for Louis Thompson who made his first league start since November 2016.

City started brightly and were looking sharp going forward, with a couple of moves involving Moritz Leitner and Teemu Pukki eventually coming to nothing despite nice build-up play.

On 14 minutes, Ivo Pinto surged in from the right and slotted the ball through to Pukki but his goalbound effort was blocked at the last second.

City’s inability to capitalise on their positive opening was punished on 21 minutes as Leeds scored with their first effort on goal. Hernandez picked out Alioski running into the box from the left and his header was beaten away by Tim Krul, only for Klich to slot home the rebound.

It was two moments later as Alioski once again burst into the box from a similar angle but this time he went for goal himself and beat Krul at his near post to double Leeds’ advantage.

The visitors tried to press home their advantage and City had to be alert to prevent a third going in, although Krul was relatively unthreatened for the rest of the first-half.

The Canaries improved as the game edged towards half-time and Pukki against had a shot blocked before Bailey Peacock-Farrell produced some excellent goalkeeping from set pieces to keep the score at 0-2.

City produced the same amount of endeavour after emerging for the second-half but it was often the final ball that was letting them down.

A moment of real quality from the visitors saw them make it three on 67 minutes. Hernandez was allowed to cut in from the left and he curled the ball past Krul and into the far corner.

The third knocked the stuffing out of City and Leeds went close to adding a fourth in the final ten minutes as Alioski’s goalbound strike was headed over the crossbar.

But the result stayed at 3-0 as Leeds headed north with the points.
