Ex-Canaries around Europe

As part of a series of features looking at ex-Canaries, Steve Whitlam tracks the progress of some former Norwich City players who are currently playing or working in football around Europe

First up is Dani Pacheco (2011), who is currently playing in his native Spain for second division side AD Alcoron, whom he joined on September 2. Pacheco made six appearances on loan to Norwich from Liverpool, scoring twice.

Also in Spain is former international defender Juan Velasco (2008) who is coaching Xerez’s ‘B’ team. Velasco made three appearances for City and then played in Greece for Panthrakikos and Larissa.

Also coaching is Jean Yves de Blasiis (1999-2001). The French midfielder is on the backroom staff at Bordeaux where he began his career. Former loan signing Antoine Sibierski (2008) was appointed Sporting Director at French side RC Lens. Sibierski scored twice in 15 games on loan from Wigan. 

French full-back Matthieu Louis-Jean (2005-07) is scouting in Europe for Nottingham Forest, having previously performed this role for Liverpool.  

Dutch full-back and Milk Cup winner Dennis Van Wijk (1982-86) is currently the manager of Belgian Second Division side Westerlo, whom he joined on May 1, 2013. They are currently leading the division. This is the 12th club in Belgium and Holland that he has managed.

Swedish striker Matthias Svensson (2003-05 & pictured) is Director of Football at Elfsborg in his homeland, while former Danish international defender Thomas Helveg (2004-05) is on the coaching staff at Danish side OB.

Playing in Denmark are defenders Jens Berthel Askou (2009-11) and Dario Dumic (2008-10). Askou, who made 33 appearances for Norwich, is playing for Esbjerg whom he joined in August 2013 from Vejle Kolding. Dumic made one appearance for Norwich but has made 21 appearances so far this season for Brondby.

Danish striker David Nielsen (2001-03) is assistant manager at Norwegian side Stromsgodset, where he played on loan in 2008.

Former Norway manager Age Hareide (1982-84) was appointed boss of Swedish side Malmo on January 9. He has won the league title in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Erik Fuglestad (1997-2000) is head coach at Norwegian minnows Randaberg.

Former Manchester United and Norway defender Henning Berg (2013) briefly scouted for the Canaries before being appointed manager of Polish side Legia Warsaw on December 19.

Former Canary forwards Goran Maric (2009) and Arturo Lupoli (2008-09) are both playing in Hungary. Lupoli joined Honved from Italian side Varsese on February 21 whilst Maric joined Lompard Papa for a second time in August 2012 after playing in Kazakhstan for FC Zhetsyu.
