U23s comfortably overcome Lowestoft in friendly

5 September 2017

A Norwich City XI comfortably beat Lowestoft Town 3-0 in an entertaining friendly at Crown Meadow.

Savvas Mourgos, a recent summer signing from Arsenal, got the ball rolling in the first half with a terrific 25-yard strike before Adam Phillips found the bottom corner in the second half to make it two. Devonte Aransibia secured the win moments later.

Lowestoft had the better chances in the opening exchanges with Josh Greenleaf twice going close. His second just evaded the top of the crossbar.

However, City should have gone ahead on 20 minutes. Pierre Fonkeu scaled the edge of the penalty area and squeezed the ball through to Kieran Higgs whose shot was brilliantly saved by Elvijs Putnins.

Shortly after, Max Aarons and Phillips both had powerful efforts from long range tipped over spectacularly by Putnins as City began to assert themselves on the game.

On 35 minutes, Higgs went mightily close to scoring. Mourgos threaded a brilliant ball through the Lowestoft defence but again Putnins was there to thwart Higgs from close-range.

Mourgos was looking a real threat from deep and he proved the difference heading into the interval, letting fly from 25 yards and finding the top corner.

Mourgos turned provider for City’s second goal on 64 minutes. A sweeping move ended with the former Arsenal man setting the ball back to Phillips who unleashed an unstoppable low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Aransibia made it three just moments later. The versatile youngster showed neat footwork in the box and managed to squeeze the ball under Putnins.

Deadline day signing Fonkeu almost got his name on the scoresheet in the final ten minutes and his left-footed strike fizzed just wide of Putnins near post.

All in all, it was a much-needed run out for Gill’s youngsters as they get their Premier League 2 campaign back underway on Monday away to Newcastle United.
