Matt Gill lavished heaps of praise on his Under-23s as they continued their good form in Premier League 2 with a 2-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion.
City came up against an experienced Albion side but showed terrific quality going forward and a real desire and intensity without the ball.
After the match, Gill hailed the team’s work-ethic in training this week as a big reason behind their success.
“It was a really pleasing performance, off the back of a real good week’s training,” he said. “I said to the boys afterwards, they’ve got to recognise what got them a good performance tonight.
“We had a real intensity in training this week and the platform was built tonight from a really good team shape. The lads fought for each other.
“We had a real good work ethic which was fantastic to see. The individual quality that was mixed with it was really nice."
Gill was full of compliments for Savvas Mourgos who put in a brilliant display, capping it off with two fine goals.
“I’m pleased for Savvas,” the Development Squad boss added. “He’s come into the club and done excellently but had that nasty ankle injury. He’s now back up to speed and I think everyone could see how good he is tonight.”
“He reminded me a bit of Wes Hoolahan tonight. He played on the right but came inside and played as an extra number ten in there.
“He caused them real problems and in general play, he has bags of talent. From dead-balls, he’s shown a few times the quality he has.”
