Max Aarons: We will take the point and move on to Friday

14 April 2019

Max Aarons was left satisfied after Norwich City came from behind to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

City trailed going into the final ten minutes after Reece James’ first-half penalty but Teemu Pukki’s cool finish ensured the Canaries extended their unbeaten run to ten games.

“We are pleased with a point,” Aarons said to canaries.co.uk after the game. “We came here to get the win like always but with the circumstances in the game, I think the point is well-deserved. We can take it and move forward.

“Not every game is going to be the same. We were playing away at a tough team. We had to adapt to it but try and stick to what we do.

“If there’s a battle to be won, we have to match it. I wouldn’t say we were below-par but we made a good battle of it today.

“We tried to mix things up in the second-half, sometimes drop it into the frontman or play it through them. I thought we were a lot better in the second-half.

“We’ve come from behind quite a lot this season and I definitely thought we could go on and win it. Like I said, we are a point further away from everyone else.”

Head Coach Daniel Farke made a triple substitution with 15 minutes left, bringing on Mario Vrancic, Moritz Leitner and Jordan Rhodes, and the switch reaped immediate benefits.

Aarons believes the strength of the City squad will be crucial in the final four games.

“You look at our bench and we’ve got some quality players on there. They’ve come on and done really well and that shows the squad depth we have.

“We have two games in four days coming up so it’s going to be important. We have a tough away game at Stoke on the Monday and Sheffield Wednesday on Friday so we are going to need everyone to play their part.”

City were cheered on by a 5,300-strong raucous away support and Aarons was full of praise for the travelling faithful.

“You see our fans turn out in their numbers, it gives us that motivation to perform. It’s gives us a boost to go out and play well.

“We stayed back and gave the fans a good round of applause because they deserved that. They were loud and that’s all we can ask for. They do give you a massive boost.”
