Late comeback falls short as Under-18s lose out to Leicester City

30 January 2021

Norwich City Under-18s took a 4-3 loss to Leicester City, despite efforts of a late comeback on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts had the first chance of the game in just the second minute, firing their shot high and wide as they looked for the early lead after getting in behind City’s defensive line.

Four minutes later, City came close to their first sight of goal when Nelson Khumbeni freed himself up in the midfield, making a surging run forward before threading a through ball for Oscar Thorn. The run looked promising, but the danger was cleared when the Foxes’ ‘keeper came out to beat the forward to the ball.

Just a minute after the 15th, Leicester found their early goal. Stealing the ball from Abu Kamara in the midfield and countering, the Foxes saw their chance end with a shot on goal from Terell Pennant, his shot firing past Sam Blair for the lead.

Less than ten minutes following their first, Leicester doubled their lead after another counter-attack caught City off-guard, Pennant the scorer once more as he bagged his brace.

Shortly after, City reduced the deficit with a goal of their own, Sean Stewart’s shot on-target forcing the save, the subsequent deflection falling to Jon Rowe who laced the ball into the open net.

Without any break from the action, Leicester found their third as Pennant earnt his hat-trick in just 29 minutes, another finish from the young Foxes’ forward finding the back of the net and opening the lead to two once more.

Ethan Fitzhugh then made that lead three, his left-footed shot from outside the box beating Blair once more to make the scores 4-1 just after the 30th minute.

The young Canaries weren’t beaten just yet, however. The lead was reduced to two again after a nice passing move from the side set Thorn up in front of goal, the forward’s composed finish earning him his goal just before half time.

Coming out for the second half, the Canaries looked motivated as they chased the game. Sean Stewart stepped up for a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the 18-yard box, his shot being tipped onto the crossbar by the ‘keeper.

Ten minutes later, City were given the perfect chance to get back into the game, being awarded a penalty after Rowe was fouled in the 18-yard box. Abu Kamara stepped up to the spot-kick, finishing calmly into the bottom right corner to see the Canaries one goal behind.

After conceding in the 66th minute, the Foxes defended tightly with a compact backline as they fought to hold onto their lead.

Despite close calls, such as Joe Duffy’s shot inside the box dragging wide, or Oscar Thorn's last-third pass rolling just out of reach and away from danger, Leicester kept this lead intact, taking all three points and their first win of the 2020-2021 season.
