Goalkeeper opportunities 2020-2021

20 July 2020

The 2019-20 season has proven that the new Goalkeeper development pathway, developed and delivered in Cambridge was highly successful, effective and popular.

The 2020-2021 season will see the blue print of the Cambridge region being implemented in the Peterborough and Suffolk areas, whilst striving to build on the great successes and reputation we have generated in the Goalkeeper pathway by providing unique opportunities and events, never seen before in the RDP.

Our programs new structures accommodates all ages and abilities, both boys and girls to allow them to flourish in a safe learning environment with clear progression routes to help them be the best they can with a smile on their face whilst on their journey.

Our initial first stage is the Goalkeeper Centres, providing participants with a high level of learning within a close knit environment due to the limits on numbers, to focus on quality over quantity. This stage allows more than most students to work with those who will benefit their learning, meaning that if an U9 needs to work with an U11 in order to progress, if this is safe to do so then it will be provided.

The next stage is the Player Development Centre (PDC), these goalkeepers will be selected to strongly challenge their relevant age groups Elite goalkeeper. The layout of this stage, is that if the Elite Goalkeeper is unavailable or there is a space to do so,  then these goalkeepers may be selected to take a place, as  their abilities will closely match that of the current elites goalkeepers via the training they will be given. They will have the chance to showcase their skills in the regular PDC fixtures.

The top stage of the programme is the Elite PDC (EPDC). These participants  will be those, who in our detailed trials, not only show a high level of ability but also have the correct attitude. In the boys programme their position and therefore target would be to be selected for the City select training sessions /games at the Norwich City Academy, which two of our Cambridge Elites achieved, with the overall aim for Academy selection. In the girls pathway it is to gain a level of performance and experience to open up opportunities to move onto advanced centres that are provided by the FA or Girl Academies run by various clubs.

Both our boys and girls PDC’s and Elite PDC’s will have chances to be part of their squads exciting annual tour opportunities. Previously visiting destinations both in the UK and abroad participating in stadium tours, team building activities and fixtures, in an action packed week away.

The whole goalkeeper programme will have the chance to be involved in a trips to the home of English football, St Georges Park.

The programme also wishes to enrich and inspire its participants with webinars and online sessions from ex and current professionals in both the men’s game and the women’s in Q+A sessions or just talks on their experiences and advice that can be given to the next generation.

With the role of the goalkeeper very specific and their training usually forgotten and position not fully understood, we are keen from now to provide our services to grassroots clubs and coaches through live or webinar CPD events to help bolster knowledge and enable learning.

Each of our three tiers operates over 32-36 weeks of the season with a variety of opportunities within half term and school holidays.
