City fight back to beat Paderborn

15 July 2018

Norwich City produced a brilliant second-half comeback to beat Paderborn 3-2 in their first German pre-season tour match.

Paderborn were much the better side in the first-half and led at half-time after goals from Sven Michel and Phillipp Klement.

However, City produced a brilliant turnaround in the second as Dennis Srbeny and Teemu Pukki (2) saw them leading by the hour mark.

And 3-2 was how it finished as City showed their fighting qualities in the second-half.

City lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Tom Trybull in front of a back four of Ben Marshall, Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose and James Husband. Marco Stiepermann started on the right side of the midfield with Onel Hernandez on the left and Kenny McLean and Moritz Leitner in the middle. Former Paderborn man Dennis Srbeny started alone up-front.

Paderborn took the lead within 30 seconds of kick-off. A break down the left-hand side eventually led to a cutback being slotted into the bottom corner by Michel.

City responded well though with McLean having a header saved and the lively Hernandez cutting in and seeing his firm strike well-saved by the goalkeeper.

Paderborn were very effective in their pressing in the first-half and could have easily doubled their advantage on 20 minutes when Duker was denied by a superb Remi Matthews stop from close-range.

Klose then produced a goal-saving intervention inside the area before Paderborn eventually made it two on 40 minutes when Klement played a one-two before finding the bottom with a low strike from 25 yards.

Daniel Farke made four changes at the break with Michael McGovern, Felix Passlack, Louis Thompson and Teemu Pukki enterting the fray and it gave City a new lease of life as they managed to turn the game around by the hour mark.

First, Srbeny grabbed his second in as many games after rolling the ball into the far corner following a Hernandez cutback before Pukki got his first goal in City colours, finishing calmly after a brilliant turn sent his marker in a spin.

The Canaries then seized the advantage moments lafter and it was Pukki, again, with a moment of brilliance. He shifted the ball onto his right, around 20 yards from goal, and curled an unstoppable drive into the corner.

And City showed brilliant defensive qualities to hold out for the win in the end and begin their pre-season trip in Germany with a win.
