City's Under-23s beaten by Wolves in PL Cup

9 February 2018

Norwich City Under-23s went down to a 2-0 defeat to Wolves in Group C of the Premier League Cup at St George's Park on Friday night.

Several players involved in a gruelling 120 minute FA Youth Cup clash with Newcastle on Wednesday represented City once again less than 48 hours later.

Although the effort and determination was there throughout, those exploits ultimately took their toll with the game proving to be a bridge too far for a battle-weary squad.

A first half of few clear-cut chances saw both teams enjoy varying spells of control, but it was Wolves who took advanatge of their period of dominance with 30 minutes on the clock.

The Canaries failed to sufficiently clear a ball from the right, with Pedro Goncalves on hand to slam beyond Aston Oxborough into the net.

Matt Gill's youngsters responded well, and would have gone into the interval level had Tristan Abrahams' drilled effort not gone the wrong side of the post.

After the restart, City pushed hard for a leveller, with Savvas Mourgos in particular being a lively outlet with some energetic bursts forward.

They continued to do so for much of the half, going close with little over 15 minutes remaining when substitute Anthony Spyrou whipped over.

Mourgos again threatened shortly after from a set-piece situation, but could only find the side-netting with a well-hit free-kick from the edge of the box.

Despite that pressure, Wolves held firm and effectively sealed the game six minutes from time when Carlos Heredia skipped in from the right to roll home their second of the night.

The final result could have been even harsher on City as the match moved into injury-time, but Aston Oxborough produced a stunning save to tip a stinging drive from distance onto the crossbar.

With seven points in Group C so far, the Canaries now have one fixture remaining in the group stages of the competition - a home clash with Bury scheduled for later this month.
