Wolfsburg also suffered a defeat in their last game, losing 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-23s at the Lamex Stadium in Stevenage. However they made a good start to the campaign with a 4-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Norwich will face Tottenham next time out in the cup at Colney Training Centre on Friday, December 21, in their final match of the group.

The six group winners and the two best runners-up will then advance to the quarter finals.

City fight back to secure a draw in the international cup

13 December 2018

Norwich City’s Under-23s fought back to claim a 2-2 draw in the Premier League International Cup after two second-half goals from VfL Wolfsburg.

City defended well in the first half to deny the visitors an opening goal, with Nelson Oliveira putting Norwich ahead in the 34th minute, slotting home Matt Jarvis’ deflected strike.

However, Wolfsburg came out fighting after the break with Blaz Kramer bringing them level after good spells of pressure followed by a second from captain Daniel Hanslik. Anthony Spyrou got the equaliser with less than 10 minutes to go and despite several good chances for Simon Power, City were unable to find the back of the net again.

Jon McCracken returned to the starting line-up after being out of action. The match also saw three City First Team players in the mix; Nelson Oliveira, Kenny McLean and Matt Jarvis.

McLean returned back after picking up a ligament injury in City’s Carabao Cup match in August against Stevenage, while Jarvis was given his first minutes on the pitch since his long absence with an injury.

The visitors had most of the possession in the first half which saw attempts from Wolfsburg’s captain Daniel Hanslik, but his shots ended up wide from goal.

City’s first real chance came in the 12th minute when Caleb Richards cross found McLean who headed it across to Jarvis who was unable to reach the free ball.

With 20 minutes to go in the first-half, the visitors continued to press City’s defence which saw a chance from Robin Ziegele as he headed the ball just wide of the far post. Shortly after, Julian Justvan got into a good position and took a powerful curling shot at McCracken who did well to tip the ball over the bar.

Clever football between Jarvis and Oliveira saw the opener for the Canaries. Oliveira's smart flick fell to Jarvis whose deflected shot ended up at the feet of the Portuguese striker who blasted the ball into the bottom left corner, making it 1-0 in the 34th minute.

City made their first changes for the start of the second half, with Anthony Spyrou and Tom Scully replacing McLean and Jarvis. Five minutes later, Wolfsburg made a change and Iba May came on for Yannik Moker.

The visitors then went level in the 52nd minute with a cross from outside the box which Braz Kramer received and headed back across goal past McCracken.

Ten minutes after the visitors equalised, they got a second after Justvan’s cross inside the box found Hanslik who took a low shot through City’s defence to take the lead. A mistake from Dominik Franke resulted in a corner for the Canaries which fell to Ciaren Jones but the ball bounced, making it hard for the centre-back to head it home.

David Wright made his final change in the 79th minute and replaced Adam Philips with Josh Coley. City then got one back in the 82nd minute when Simon Power ran down the wing and crossed a low ball to Spyrou who poked the ball in the back of the net. The visitors made their final changes which saw goal scorer Kramer and Malcolm Badu come off for Jannis Heuer and Nathan Wahlig.

In the final moments of the game, Power had three great chances to help the Canaries take three points but his close range efforts went wide and just over ending the game in a draw.

City Starting XI: McCracken; Kamal, Richards, Jones, Odusina (c), Payne, Power, Phillips (Coley 79), Oliveira, McLean (Spyrou 45), Jarvis (Scully 45)

Unused subs: Johnson; Ekumah
