City defender ready to tackle Red Devils

DEFENDER Sebastien Bassong is hoping to extend a recent run of impressive defensive displays against Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

With just two goals conceded in the previous five matches, Norwich City’s defence has been tough to break down in recent weeks and Bassong knows they will need to be equally tight against a free-scoring United team at Carrow Road.

The Red Devils roared back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 last time out, and with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, and Danny Welbeck all at Sir Alex Ferguson’s disposal, they present a tough challenge, but one that Bassong is more than happy to take on.

He told Canaries Player: “You don’t need any extra motivation when you’re playing Manchester United because that comes by itself.

“But it’s just a football game. We never know what can happen in football, that’s why it’s so exciting. We’ll go there, play our best, and we never know what can happen.

“I’m looking forward to playing against them [the United strikers] the same as I’m looking forward to playing against any striker.

“I’m aware of the quality they have and it’ll be a tough game because of that, but we’ll see how we cope.”

Confidence is clearly high in the camp after last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Reading – the Club’s first top-flight clean sheet away from home since October 2004.

Bassong added: “It was a good point for us away from home and we had a feeling we could have got a bit more, but we kept the run going which was important.

“As long as you don’t concede goals you’re always going to have the chance to score one and get the three points so it’s really important for us to be tight at the back and as a team, because we know we’re going to have the chance to score.

“No matter who is playing at the back, we have the same mentality and we all have the same aim.

“I’m well settled down in Norwich now, everyone is happy, I’m happy too, and Norwich is treating me well.”
