City defender signs up to help Norfolk children speak Spanish

A BARCLAYS Premier League footballer is backing a new initiative to help Norfolk students improve their language skills.

Javier Garrido, Norwich City Football Club's Spanish defender, has signed up to support Spanish Double Club, which is being launched on Tuesday, September 11).

Javier will provide the voice for the NCFC Study Centre’s Spanish Double Club that will teach Spanish through football-themed lessons and sports sessions. During the six-week project, students will be able to listen to audio clips of Javier speaking Spanish and learn how to speak, write and read Spanish.

Study centre manager, Paul Wickens said: “This is an exciting new project that we are thrilled to be involved in, and hope to be able to offer to more schools later this year.

“We hope this unique way of learning languages will increase students’ enjoyment of speaking languages and encourage students to study languages at GCSE.”

The course, funded by Routes into Languages East and created by a qualified teacher and languages' advisor, has been designed to help children and young people develop basic conversational skills. Teacher's packs and student workbooks will be provided as part of the course, as well as a NCFC language champion who will attend classroom sessions and run sports sessions.

Double Club students will be invited to visit Carrow Road for a Language Day and presented with a certificate on successful completion of the course.
