Martin and Bassong named Club and Team captains for 2013-14 seasonCITY are pleased to confirm Russell Martin has been appointed as Club Captain for the 2013-14 season and Sebastien Bassong will be Team Captain.
Stalwart Russ Martin, one of only two survivors from the Club’s League One title success in 2009-10 along with Wes Hoolahan, has made 147 appearances and scored 10 goals during three-and-a-half years of sterling service for the Canaries.
Meanwhile, defender Sebastien Bassong made a huge impact last season after joining from Spurs, playing 35 games and scoring 3 goals as his commanding performances earned him the Anglian Home Improvements Player of the Season Trophy.
City boss Chris Hughton commented: “I’ve made my decision on the basis that I wanted both Russ and Seb to be involved in the roles of Club Captain and Team Captain.
“The decision to make Russ Club Captain is based on what he has given us both on and off the pitch during the period of time he has been with us. He yet again made a vital contribution to the cause last season as of course he has done in previous years.”
“Seb as Player of the Season had a big influence on our campaign last year and is a player who has settled in very well to the Norwich way.
New Club Captain Russ Martin said: “Everyone knows how I feel about playing for this Club and the great relationships I share with the supporters, players and staff here.
“The gaffer has recognised something within me, which he believes validated the appointment of an over-riding Club Captain and I thank him for that. I am honoured to be offered this role, a position I have accepted with relish and delight and will fulfil with the enthusiasm and maturity it deserves.
“My role is to be there for all the players at the Club, on and off the pitch, from scholars, through to the First Team if they need any assistance and to work with Seb in helping get the maximum performance and togetherness from our squad on and off the pitch.
“I am looking forward to the season ahead and believe it’ll be another successful one for us all.”
New team skipper Sebastien Bassong, who will be presented with the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy before kick-off today, said he was proud and honoured to be given the captaincy.
“I am really honoured to be made Captain. I will work very hard and do everything I can to repay the trust the manager has had in me.
“I think all of the squad worked really hard to improve not just individually but as a team last season and that’s something of course we want to do again this season.
“I just want to thank the fans in Norwich for their support for the team and for me personally. It was a great season last year and we want to make sure it is another good season for us all this time around.”
