Midfielder speaks ahead of Liverpool encounter

JONNY Howson says he’s thrilled to be getting a regular run in the Norwich City side – but insists he’s taking nothing for granted.

The 25-year-old midfielder is the only outfield player to have featured in every Premier League game for the Canaries this season and says it’s all down to hard work.

“That’s always the way I’ve looked at it. If I work hard and do everything I can in training, that’s all I can do,” said the former Leeds United man.

“It’s nice to get a run in the side now, and I think that always helps. When you’re in and out of the team, it’s difficult to find that rhythm and the level of performance that you want.

“For me though, it’s never been about individuals. It’s always about the team.”

The fulcrum of that team this season has been the blossoming partnership between Howson and Leroy Fer in middle of the park, and he’s been impressed by the Dutchman’s impact.

“It’s something I’m enjoying at the minute,” added Howson during his press conference at Colney Training Centre on Monday afternoon.

“You could see straight away when he first came in pre-season that he was a top quality player.

“The more that we see of him, the more that we find out about him. He’s an all-action midfielder and can do a bit of everything.”

Looking ahead to the Liverpool match on Wednesday, Howson thinks the Canaries can take belief from the fact that the Reds were beaten 3-1 by Hull City last weekend.

“I don’t see why not. I don’t think before the game anyone would have given Hull a chance, and that’s not being disrespectful. Fair play to them, so yeah certainly.

“Liverpool have obviously got off to a very good start this season and they’ve been very impressive, but fair play to Hull – I think it shows that on any given day these upsets can be achieved.”
