City boss pleased with win in Sacramento

CITY boss Chris Hughton was pleased as the Canaries beat Mexican side Dorados de Sinoloa in Sacramento to get their 2013-14 pre-season underway.

Goals from Luciano Becchio, Anthony Pilkington and a first senior strike from youngster Josh Murphy gave City a comfortable win in front of an estimated crowd of 14,000 at the Raley Field stadium.

And after a good work-out for his squad, Hughton also confirmed key players Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Leroy Fer and Wes Hoolahan will all feature in Saturday’s next game against San Jose Earthquakes having sat this one out.

“In some ways it was a typical first pre-season game. We took our time to get going,” said the City Manager.

“They showed some really good touches in that first period I thought and we had to defend well. Sometimes in these types of games it is all about the first goal and you could see it opened up then. That is exactly how it panned out. I thought we were able to introduce some players that made us a bit stronger overall and we were able to capitalise on that.”

With the game locked at 0-0 at the break, Hughton made five changes at half-time and the game turned decisively in City’s favour thanks to three goals in a six-minute spell, including an excellent finish from Josh Murphy.
“The changes we made at half-time were decided in advance. Generally, the ones who came off I only wanted to play 45 minutes. But whatever team I had picked to start that first half I’m not sure it would have altered the flow of the game.”

“Josh we decided to put off the front because he has played that role a little bit more and it was some goal. It was real good quality and I was really pleased for him. I still think he is one who has more development in him. Is he one who I think is ready at this moment? No, probably not but you just never know. He is a young lad and it will certainly benefit him being out here.”

Hughton also confirmed that van Wolfswinkel, Fer and Hoolahan will all figure on Saturday against MLS side San Jose Earthquakes after missing the game in Sacramento:

“With those lads you mentioned it was always in my mind to do that. They came back a little later after being away with their countries and it was the same with Wes. All three of them will be involved on Saturday.”
