City boss ahead of Timbers test

THE Canaries had a taste of the JELD-WEN Field stadium, home of the Portland Timbers, ahead of their final pre-season match in the USA on Wednesday (8pm local time, 4am GMT).

Canaries’ boss Chris Hughton took a training session at the venue on Tuesday afternoon in front of a small band of Canary fans who came along to watch and was impressed with the venue for the game ahead.

“It’s a magnificent stadium. We’d heard about it before we came and you can imagine when they fill this, which I think they do on a regular basis it’s a very difficult place to come,” said the City boss.

“But we’re looking forward to it, it will be new for us – and certainly the artificial surface is a different type of surface than what we’re used to. But that’s the reason why we’ve come here to test ourselves and for these challenges.

“They’re in a very good position in the league, above LA Galaxy, which shows what a good season they’ve had so far, and as I’ve said here with a big support you can see why it’s a difficult place to come.”
With another double-session under their belts ahead of the game there is also good news from home on some key members of the squad who haven’t been able to take part in the tour.

“We’re shaping up well. If I look at the centre-half positions Sebastien Bassong and Michael Turner who didn’t come with us are making very good progress at home.

“And Bradley Johnson, who went home yesterday, he’s fine he tweaked his knee very slightly – but the good news on that one is that it isn’t a problem and he should be training in the next few days. Apart from that we’re ok.”
