Former Canaries plying their trade in the north west

As part of a series of features looking at ex-Canaries, Steve Whitlam tracks the progress of former Norwich City players currently plying their trade in the north west of England.

YOUTH team product Ian Henderson (2001-07) made headlines at the weekend by scoring for Rochdale in their shock FA Cup Third Round victory over Leeds United.

Academy product Henderson is joined by former loan signing Michael Rose (2010) at Spotland.

Wigan signed both striker Grant Holt (2009-13) and central defender Leon Barnett (2010-13) from Norwich in the summer for undisclosed fees.

Barnett scored three goals in 55 appearances for Norwich but has already scored four times for Wigan this season. Holt though scored 78 goals for City in 168 appearances but has been limited to two goals for Wigan.

Former Norwich defender Matt Jackson (1996-2001) is operations manager for Wigan, for whom he played over 160 games.

Also leaving Norwich for the north west last summer was left-back Marc Tierney (2010-13) who signed for Bolton on May 30. He has played nine games for Bolton this season.

Championship high-flyers Burnley field former Norwich captain Jason Shackell (2000-08, 2009) in defence and one-time Canary loan signings Dean Marney (2005) and Sam Vokes (2011) in midfield and attack respectively.

Shackell joined Burnley from Derby in July 2012 and has made 24 appearances this season, scoring once. Marney signed from Hull in May 2010. Welsh international Vokes has scored 10 goals in 29 appearances during the current campaign.

Former Norwich and Nigeria midfielder Dickson Etuhu (2005-07) joined Blackburn on August 3, 2012 from Fulham. He has made just one appearance this season.

Scottish international goalkeeper Matt Gilks (2007-08) has made 176 appearances for Blackpool since transferring from Norwich in June 2008. He is coached by Tony Warner (2007) who joined the Seasiders in the summer.

Midfielder Korey Smith (2007-13) joined Oldham on June 20, 2013 following the expiry of his Norwich contract. He had played 73 times for City. He has scored once in 27 appearances for Oldham.

Another regular at Boundary Park is former loan signing Jonathan Grounds (2008, 2009) who joined Oldham from Middlesbrough on July 2, 2012.

Declan Rudd (2000-present) is on a season-long loan to Preston. He has made 23 appearances this season.

Full-back Jon Otsemobor (2007-10) joined Tranmere Rovers on loan from MK Dons on November 28.

When David Moyes became Manchester United’s manager, he brought goalkeeping coach Chris Woods (1981-86) with him from Everton to Old Trafford. Woods had performed this role at Everton since 1998. Former England international ‘keeper Woods played 267 times for Norwich.

Former Norwich defender Rob Newman (1991-99) has responsibility for global scouting for Manchester City. Newman made 249 appearances for Norwich.

Kevin Reeves (1977-80) joined Everton as chief scout in July 2013. He had followed Roberto Martinez from Swansea to Wigan and then to Everton. Reeves was Norwich’s first £1m sale when he joined Manchester City in March 1980.
