Canaries dominate Italian opponentsUPDATE: In our original match report for this warm-up fixture, acting in good faith on the basis of information given to the Club, we incorrectly reported that we had played against local club side SC Vallée d’Aoste. In fact the game was against an Aosta regional select side and we are happy to put the record straight and apologise to SC Vallée d’Aoste and their fans for the misunderstanding.
The game was convened at very short notice following the late cancellation of our previously scheduled match against Novara.
The hospitality shown to Norwich City Football Club by the people in Saint-Vincent and the surrounding area has been excellent and our training camp there has seen the squad continue to build their fitness levels, as we gear up for our three forthcoming friendlies against top-flight European opposition in the shape of SC Bastia, OGC Nice and Celta Vigo.
NORWICH City proved much too strong for a local regional select XI in Italy as they eased to a 13-0 win at the Piergiorgio Perucca Stadium in Saint-Vincent.
Braces for Russell Martin, Anthony Pilkington, Jamar Loza and Jacob Murphy, plus further goals from Gary Hooper, Wes Hoolahan, Steven Whittaker, Nathan Redmond and Josh Murphy completed the rout.
Neil Adams opted for a diamond midfield to start, with Redmond selected up front with Hooper and Ryan Bennett partnering skipper Martin in central defence.
Hooper had a goal disallowed on three minutes after he converted Anthony Pilkington’s cross from an offside position as the Canaries started the match immediately on the front foot.
Ryan Bennett then saw a downward header come back off the bar as it soon became clear that a Norwich City goal was only a matter of time.
It came through Hooper, who was on hand to convert Martin Olsson’s low delivery on nine minutes.
Nathan Redmond then powered a shot against the bar before the Canaries doubled their lead on the quarter hour as Pilkington netted first time after picking up Olsson’s pass.
Hoolahan and Redmond had chances to quickly add a third, before the latter was denied by a fine reaction save from Alex Erba on the half hour and another just moment later.
After missing those gilt-edged chances, City went on a goalscoring spurt that was started by Hoolahan scoring on 35 minutes with an exquisite chip over Erba after Hooper’s pass.
Martin fired in from close range to make it four prior to Steven Whittaker putting his name on the scoresheet with a well-struck drive from the edge of the box on 38 minutes.
A minute before the half-time break, Martin scored again, this time meeting Pilkington’s free-kick at the back-post to rifle a shot into the opposite corner of the net.
HALF-TIME: Norwich City 6-0 Regional Select XI
Redmond got a deserved goal six minutes into the second half as he powered home left-footed from 20 yards before substitute Jamar Loza finished well after Jacob Murphy’s clever reverse ball.
Josh Murphy tried his luck from distance and was successful on 61 minutes, his drive nestling into the bottom right corner.
Loza was denied by the Italian ‘keeper but got his second and the team’s tenth on 73 minutes before Pilkington jinxed in the box to score with a quarter of an hour left on the clock.
Jacob Murphy became the Canaries’ ninth scorer of the evening a minute later when he raced in from the right before shooting inside the post – his first senior goal for the Club.
One became two for Jacob with three minutes left on the clock as he tapped home his brother’s cross from close range in what proved to be the final scene in City’s demolition act.
