Former City players now in coaching or backroom roles

As part of a series of features looking at ex-City players, and with the return of Mark Bowen (1987-96) to Carrow Road with Stoke City last Saturday, Steve Whitlam looks at other former Canaries in coaching or backroom roles.

The Welshman followed Mark Hughes to Stoke at the beginning of June 2013, becoming assistant manager. They had worked together previously at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR.

Bowen was signed by Norwich from Spurs, as was Ian Culverhouse (1985-94, 2009-12) who made 369 appearances for City. He is currently assistant manager at Aston Villa, having also performed that role at Colchester and Norwich.

Former Welsh international David Williams (1985-92, 2004-2007) was appointed as assistant to manager Brian Flynn at Doncaster Rovers on February 7, 2013. They had worked together coaching Wales’ youth teams.

Williams made 74 appearances in midfield for Norwich after signing from Bristol Rovers. He returned to the Canaries in 2004 as the assistant Academy manager.

Kevin Bond (1974-81) became assistant manager at QPR on December 1, 2012. He had previously worked with manager Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth, Southampton and Tottenham. Former Norwich captain Ian Butterworth (1986-94, 2009) joined QPR as scouting co-ordinator on June 14, 2013.

Other former Canaries in scouting roles include Kevin Reeves (1977-80) who is chief scout at Everton, a position he took on in July 2013. Reeves was Norwich’s first £1m sale when he joined Manchester City in 1980. He has worked with Everton manager Roberto Martinez at Swansea City and Wigan Athletic.

Rob Newman (1991-98) will clock up plenty of air miles in his role as Manchester City’s international senior scouting and recruitment manager. West Bromwich Albion’s Head of European Recruitment is former Norwich defender Tony Spearing (1984-88).

Former Norwich striker and manager John Deehan (1981-86, 1992-95, 2009) joined Sheffield Wednesday at the end of January 2014 to assist head coach Stuart Gray with scouting and player contracts. Phil Chapple (1984-88) has been chief scout at Charlton since 2007.

Plagued by injury whilst at Norwich, French full-back Matthieu Louis-Jean (2005-07) made just two appearances for Norwich after signing from Nottingham Forest. At the end of 2012, he rejoined Forest as one of their European scouts. He had previously scouted in France for Liverpool’s academy.

Keith Bertschin (1981-84) joined Hull City as first team coach on June 29 2012. He had previously been reserve team manager at Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland.

Former loan signing Kevin Cooper (2004) helped the Canaries to the Division One title in 2003-04. He joined Cardiff City in the summer of 2012 to coach their under-21 team.

Former Norwich first team coach Martin Hunter (2006-07) has managed Southampton’s Under-21s since July 13 2010. Chris Llewellyn (1995-2003) is coaching Swansea City’s Under-14s.
Former Stoke City favourite Mike Sheron (1994-95) was appointed head of academy coaching at Rotherham on September 17, 2013. He was previously youth team coach at Bury. Sheron scored 39 goals in 77 appearances for Stoke after arriving from Norwich in 1995.
