First-team pair return from injury in U21s friendly win over Charlton

MICHAEL Turner and Jonas Gutierrez each played 45 minutes on their comeback from injury for Norwich City’s Under-21s as they beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Colney Training Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Both members of Chris Hughton’s first team squad came through the first half unscathed before Carlton Morris scored twice after the break to secure the victory, with his winner coming deep into stoppage time.

Under-21s coach Mark Robson said afterwards: “We were able to get Michael and Jonas out there for a half - it was good that they were able to get some time on the pitch under their belt.

“The fact that they’re on their way back meant they were feeling their way into it. Hopefully they’re not going to be too far away from selection for the first-team.”

The Addicks had taken the lead on 24 minutes from the penalty spot after Kyle McFadden was adjudged to have unfairly held back their forward, but City levelled things up just a minute into the second half when Jamar Loza powered home from Josh Murphy’s pass.

The visitors went ahead once more but substitute Morris, who replaced Gutierrez at half-time, finished from inside the box on 66 minutes, with Josh Murphy once again the provider.

Ewan McNeil came off the bench for his first football since December with 20 minutes left to play, but City had to wait until the final moments to get the winner as Morris curled in from the corner of penalty area.

“It was a very good goal from Carlton, he took it very well,” added Robson.

“It was a bit of a friendly game to be fair in the first half, there was no real tempo to it. We did a bit more in the second half and created enough chances.”
