Bassong among those in action over the next fortnight

NINE Norwich City first-team players have been called up by their countries for September's round of international fixtures.

Russell Martin and Steven Whittaker are involved with the Scotland squad for their vital 2016 European Championship qualifying double-header.

Gordon Strachan's men take on Georgia in Tbilisi on Friday, September 4 (5pm) before welcoming Germany to Hampden Park on Monday, September 7 (7.45pm).


They currently occupy third place in Group D, trailing the world champions by two points and pacesetters Poland by a further point.

Republic of Ireland are in fourth place in the same group, and City pair Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady are in Martin O'Neill's 28-man squad for their matches.

O'Neill's men start off with a trip to Faro, Portugal to play Gibraltar on Friday (7.45pm) ahead of taking on Georgia at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Monday (7.45pm).

In Group F, Kyle Lafferty's Northern Ireland will be looking to consolidate their top two position.


Michael O'Neill's side will first travel to the Faroe Islands on Friday (7.45pm), then Hungary are the visitors to Belfast on Monday (7.45pm).

Alex Tettey and Martin Olsson have been called up by Norway and Sweden respectively for their qualifiers.

Norway are in action on Thursday, September 3 (7.45pm) against Bulgaria in Sofia, and they then travel back to Oslo to plays hosts to Croatia on Sunday, September 6 (5pm).

Olsson, who is yet to play for the Canaries this season after shoulder surgery in May, could feature versus Russia in Moscow on Saturday, September 5 (5pm) and when they face Austria in Stockholm on Tuesday, September 8 (7.45pm).

Defender Sebastien Bassong has been selected for Cameroon as they prepare to visit Gambia for their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday (4.30pm).


Bassong has played every minute for City this season and could earn his 16th cap for the Indomitable Lions.

After the disappointment of the summer's European Championship, Nathan Redmond will hope for a fresh start when he travels away with England's Under-21s.

Gareth Southgate's youngsters play the United States' Under-23s in a friendly at Deepdale on Thursday (7.45pm) before heading to Norway to kick-off their 2017 European Championships qualifying campaign on Monday (5.45pm).

Two players from the Canaries' Under-21s squad have also been selected for duty.

Louis Thompson is in Wales' Under-21s squad for their qualifier away to Luxembourg on Friday (5.30pm), while Cameron King is part of Scotland's Under-21s group for their game against Northern Ireland in Lurgan on Saturday (2pm).
