Ugbo hat-trick gives Chelsea victory

GRAEME Murty wants his Norwich City Under-18s side to learn from their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at Colney Training Centre on Saturday.

The visitors led at the break courtesy of Ali Suljic's header, before a second half brace from Ike Ugbo extended the lead further.

Harley Black reduced the deficit 15 minutes from time with an arrowed drive, ahead of Ugbo completing his hat-trick to give the Blues victory in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League opener.

Murty believes the match demonstrated the level his youngsters must aspire to, and told "I said to the players after the game that it showed how good they are going to have to be.

"Chelsea won the FA Youth Cup last year, so we knew they were going to be high-quality. It's the benchmark for us, and now I can't wait to play them again to see the progression we can make this season.

"We don't want to be Chelsea, but we can certainly look at ways we can emulate them. It's all about the players learning from arguably the best team in the country and bringing things into their own game."

Despite the result, the Academy coach took positives from the performance, and added: "There were periods in the game where we matched them and we worked extremely hard to limit their opportunities.

"The disappointing thing for us is all the goals they scored were avoidable. We contributed to our own downfall, which is something we'll be talking about.

"However, we tried to play in the style we want to, so the template is there in terms of what we’re trying to do. The players just need to polish certain aspects."

Norwich City XI: Oxborough; Syme, Lewis, Pollock, Wallis, Boateng, Black, Aransibia (McIntosh, 66), Ashley-Seal, Cantwell (Ramsay, 66), Couzens. Subs not used: Middleton.
