Youngsters start league campaign against FA Youth Cup champions

GRAEME Murty is looking to use Saturday's Barclays Under-18s Premier League opener against Chelsea at Colney Training Centre (11am) as a gauge of how his squad have progressed in pre-season.

The former Reading defender will take charge of the age-group for the first time in a league fixture since being confirmed to his new role in the summer, having previously worked with the Club's Under-16s.

Murty is excited for the challenge ahead, and told "We're facing the FA Youth Cup champions from last year, which makes it a brilliant game for us.

"It's a really good opportunity for us to measure where we are. I'm looking at my squad to see what they're going to achieve, and how high they can aim this year.

"The game won't define our season, but will provide us with a good idea of how pre-season has gone and what we can expect from the team."

City have one or two minor injury concerns ahead of the contest, while the availability of other players depends on the Under-21s squad selected to travel to Sunderland on Sunday.
