MLS outfit to play a City XI next week

NORWICH City will welcome Chicago Fire to Norfolk next week as the Major League Soccer side begin their pre-season preparations this side of the Atlantic.

The Fire will train at Colney Training Centre for around a week from Monday, February 2, and will play a Canaries XI in a behind-closed doors training match during their stay.

The Illinois team, who are coached by ex-Ipswich Town defender Frank Yallop, will have full use, alongside Alex Neil’s squad, of the wide range of facilities at Colney throughout their visit.

The Fire last weekend announced the signing of Scotland international winger Shaun Maloney from Wigan Athletic as one of their Designated Players for the 2015 campaign. Ex-Canary Robert Earnshaw featured for them in 2014.

They finished 9th in the Eastern Conference of MLS last term, and the new season kicks off on March 6, with The Fire away to LA Galaxy in their opening fixture.
