City earn a point after Black Cats missed penalty

NORWICH City's Under-21s played out a goalless draw with Sunderland on Monday afternoon.

Declan Rudd and Josh Murphy featured for the Canaries in the Barclays Under-21s Premier League stalemate at the Academy of Light.

Sunderland were offered a golden chance to take the lead after just seven minutes when Carl Lawson was brought down in the area.

Martin Smith stepped up to take the penalty, but saw his effort cannon back off the crossbar before Lawson fired over from the rebound.

Lawson again cleared the bar from another opportunity 20 minutes in but both teams were struggling to get a handle on the contest.

Smith floated a shot over from distance three minutes before the break just prior to George Honeyman drilling straight at Rudd, but half-time came with neither side having broken the deadlock.

Norwich started the second half positively, with Reiss Awuah forcing a save from Maksymilian Stryjek.

The lively Lawson then hit the post for the Black Cats, however, and they looked to be on the ascendancy.

Honeyman drove through the middle of the park but saw his effort blocked as the hosts pushed forward.

Both teams took a point away each in the end, with the result keeping City above their opponents in the Division One table.

NORWICH CITY: Rudd; Hall-Johnson, McFadden, Gafaiti, Moseley (Grant 80); McGrandles; Norman, Anderson (Ramsay 70), Kelly, Awuah (Efete 52); Murphy. Subs not used: Beauchamp (GK), Fox.

City are next in action on Tuesday January 27, when Borussia Monchengladbach visit Carrow Road in the Premier League International Cup.
