Gill delighted at progression of young side

A brace from Devonte Aransibia guided Norwich City Under-18s to a deserved 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Colney Training Centre on Saturday.

The Foxes had previously lost just twice on their travels this season, but goals either side of half-time from the midfielder ensured they left Norfolk empty-handed.

City dictated possession for much of the early stages in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League clash, and largely controlled the tempo throughout an excellent first 45 minutes for the hosts.

They were duly rewarded for their positive approach, with Aransibia on hand to calmly volley home a precise Kofi Boateng cross following a smart move down the left flank before the interval.

The Canaries looked to press home their advanatge in the second period, but a foul from Boateng saw Layton Ndukwu level from the penalty-spot.

Leicester looked to exploit the youthful nature of City's side by adopting an increasingly direct approach from a number of set-piece situations, but were restricted well by a highly-disciplined home team.

Such resilience instead ensured it was Norwich who took all three points ten minutes from time, when Aransibia doubled his personal tally in style.

Seizing the ball in midfield, he drove forward before powering home a fierce left-footed strike beyond the Leicester goalkeeper to end the Foxes challenge.

The manner of his side's display proved particularly pleasing for U18s coach Gill, who told "The last four weeks, we've put in really good performances.

"It's pleasing to get a good performance, plus the three points. There's a lot of young lads in this team, which is really good for our future as an Academy.

"It's difficult when you integrate U16s with U18s; they're not on a full-time programme so it's a little disjointed, but they've taken on the training really well.

"These boys are now getting exposure, so next season we will be able to hit the ground running with a strong group."

City's academy side will continue their league campaign with a visit to West Bromwich Albion this coming Saturday (12pm).
