PREVIEW: CANARIES ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY

5 October 2015

City's internationals chasing qualification

ELEVEN Norwich City first team players have been called up by their respective countries for October's upcoming international fixtures.

Russell Martin, Steven Whittaker and Graham Dorrans have been called up by Scotland, who still hold hopes of securing qualification for the 2016 European Championships from Group D.

Dorrans was a late call-up after Wolves' Kevin McDonald withdrew from the squad due to injury.

Gordon Strachan's side entertain Poland on Thursday, October 8 at Hampden Park (7.45pm), then travel to Faro to face Gibraltar on Sunday, October 11 at the Estadio do Algarve (7.45pm).

Battling Scotland for qualification are Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady, who are both in Martin O'Neill's 28-man Republic of Ireland squad.

Ireland currently sit in third place in Group D, four points and one place ahead of Scotland with two games remaining.

However, tough tests against Germany at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, October 8 (7.45pm) and the visit to the Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw to play Poland on Sunday, October 11 (7.45pm) await the City duo.

In Group F, Kyle Lafferty's Northern Ireland can confirm their progression with two points from their games against Greece in Belfast on Thursday, October 8 (7.45pm) and Finland in Helsinki on Sunday, October 11 (5.00pm).

Alex Tettey and Martin Olsson have also been called up for Norway and Sweden respectively for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Tettey's Norway are on the brink of qualifying and begin in Oslo on Saturday, October 10 against Malta (5.00pm) before travelling to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome to face off with Italy on Tuesday, October 13 (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Sweden sit third in Group G, two points behind Russia in second, but one point ahead of Montenegro.

Olsson made his first league appearance of the season in the 2-2 draw away to West Ham, and could feature in Vaduz on Friday, October 9 when Sweden play Liechtenstein (7.45pm), before returing to Solna for their final qualification group game against Moldova on Monday, October 12 (5.00pm).

Defender Sebastien Bassong has been called up by Cameroon for their fixture against Nigeria in Belgium on Sunday, October 11.

City's centre back has played every single minute of the Barclays Premier League campaign so far and is seeking to earn his 16th cap for his national side.

Head coach Gareth Southgate has called up Nathan Redmond for England Under-21s first home UEFA European 2017 Championships qualifier, playing against Kazakhstan in Coventry's Ricoh Arena on Tuesday, October 13 (5.45pm).

Fresh from his first goal for the club, Dieumerci Mbokani will travel with the Democratic Republic of Congo for two international friendlies, both of which are in Belgium.

The first against Nigeria is being played on Thursday, October 8, before the second game versus Gabon, which is hosted in Mons on Monday, October 12.

Two of the Canaries' Under-21 side have also been called up for international duty.

Louis Thompson will line up for Wales' Under-21s against Denmark Under-21s in the Aalborg Stadion on Friday, October 9 (5.45pm) for their European Championship qualifier, while Harry Toffolo could add to his solitary England Under-20 cap with the upcoming MU20 Elite Cup in Germany.

Games against The Netherlands on Wednesday, October 7 (11.00am), Turkey on Saturday, October 10 (11.00am) and Germany on Tuesday, October 13 (3.00pm) could see Toffolo feature for his country.
