Canaries lose final match of the season

GRAEME Murty says his Under-18s let Derby County off the hook as he reflected on Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Moor Farm.

City were looking to finish their campaign on a winning note and took the lead early in the second half when full-back Toby Syme found the net with a superb strike from the edge of the box.

Derby bounced back to pocket the three points, however, with goals from Timi Elsnik and Cameron Cresswell completing the turnaround and generating a feeling of frustation for Murty at the season's close.

He told "The first period was very even, with neither team really in control. We told the players at half-time that they had it in their hands to step it up and go on to win the game.

"For ten to 15 minutes in the second half, we were on top of them and quite comfortably the better team, and we scored a goal.

"But then we reverted to playing negative, poor football where too many of the players were passengers in the game.

"We were passive and allowed Derby to take the initiative, and it was no real surprise that they scored two goals because we handed the game back to them."

The result means City will finish bottom of Group 3 in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League after a disappointing run of results since the second phase of fixtures started in February.

They did manage to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup, and Murty considered that when assessing the season as a whole.

"It was a nearly season for me. We've nearly played well in lots of games, and we're nearly a good team," he added.

"When we get everyone in the team and get them working together consistently, I think it showed in the FA Youth Cup that we've got a good side capable of performing at a high level.

"More players need to step to the forefront when things occur in games, positive and negative. That's something we'll definitely be looking to address."
