City lose out to the Magpies

NORWICH City's Under-23s suffered a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United in their season opener.

With Michael Turner and Ben Godfrey at the heart of the defence, as well as Tony Andreu in the midfield, Norwich's Under-23s lined up with strength, however Newcastle faced up with a similarly experienced side.

City had the first clear cut chance in the game in the ninth minute, when a great piece of passing play was finished off with an Andreu long shot just over the bar.

Newcastle's Sean Longstaff then challenged Ben Killip in the 14th minute, but Killip's sharp reactions diffused the situation.

The first goal of the game came in the 31st minute when Godfrey was put under pressure by the Magpies' Haris Vuckic, before he slotted it past Killip to make it 1-0.

Newcastle's second came after Killip slid into a challenge with Longstaff, giving away a penalty in the 54th minute, which was taken by Gael Bigirimana and scored to the 'keeper's left, sending him the wrong way.

Andreu took his second speculative effort of the game just two minutes later which again floated over the bar before the third and final goal was scored by Vuckic, slotting past Killip after Longstaff fired a driven cross into his feet.

Ray Grant had a chance to get a goal back from a free kick in the 82nd minute, but the Newcastle 'keeper and captain, Freddie Woodman, was forced to tip the ball over the bar.

A minute later, in the 83rd minute, Longstaff's longshot beat the defence, and forced Killip to make a fantastic save in the game final's opening.
