ALEX NEIL: LET'S BUILD ON BRENTFORD

9 December 2016

Oakwell return for City boss

ALEX Neil says Norwich City must build on last weekend's thumping victory over Brentford when they travel to Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday (3pm).

The Canaries produced a superb performance against the Bees to bring an abrupt end to a run of five consecutive league defeats, beginning the month of December in ideal fashion.

With a hectic festive schedule ahead, finding a run of form this month could prove vital, and Neil told Norwich City TV: "We’d been looking for a performance like that for the majority of the season.

"Although we’d won a few games, we hadn’t strung together as comprehensive a performance as that over 90 minutes. The fans needed it, the team needed it and I certainly needed it.

"We’ll go into Saturday a lot more confident now and believing in what we want to do. We’ve won one game though, so nobody is getting carried away.

"It was an important win but now we have to perform again at Barnsley."

Neil, who represented the Tykes as a player for four seasons from 2000, appreciates the qualities the Yorkshire outfit have but knows his side are capable of taking all three points from the contest.

"They’re an industrious team who get about the pitch and have some good, young players," the 35-year-old outlined.

"It will certainly be a test as they won 3-0 at Birmingham last week. We need to make sure we’re at the top of our game.

"I’ve seen them at Oakwell when they were getting beaten by Nottingham Forest, and to be thoroughly deserved to be winning until they got a man sent off. That changed the game against them.

"We know what we’re coming up against but as always we’ve got to focus on what we’re good at. We've got to put in a good performance and hopefully the rest will take care of itself."
