ALEX NEIL: GETTING THROUGH THE GAME WAS KEY

9 July 2016

Canaries manager reflects on a winning start to pre-season

ALEX Neil was pleased to see his Norwich City side come through their opening game of pre-season on Saturday unscathed, as they step up their fitness levels ahead of the new season.

City began their preparations for the 2016-17 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Walsall at St George's Park, courtesy of goals in either half from Ryan Bennett and Cameron Jerome.

That ensured the ideal start according to Neil, who told canaries.co.uk: "It's always good for the players to get the win.

"Getting through the game without injuries was important, and we did that. We were able to get 45 minutes in their legs so all in all it was a positive.

"Sharing the time out among the lads is key to get them all ready for the season. There were also some young lads mixed in, with eight of those forming part of the 22.

"They all got time on the pitch, which is great for them, and they all did really well."

Defender Timm Klose was among those to feature having recovered from an injury suffered last term, playing the second 45 minutes alongside youngster Joe Crowe.

"It's important for senior lads to approach things properly when they've been out for a while," Neil explained.

"We had a few players missing today with minor knocks but nothing long-term. We're hoping those who weren't involved will be joining back in with us soon.

"This coming week we have two games, which will be good for us. After that we'll have the trip to Austria and two competitive games out there.

"We'll be well prepared for the season to start, and we're looking to add a little bit before that as well."
