City suffer defeat against Czech outfit in AustriaTHE CANARIES lost for the first time this pre-season as Dukla Prague beat Alex Neil's men 3-1 in Kumberg.
Goals from Aldin Cajic and Albiach Nestor put the Czech outfit in the driving seat, with Josh Murphy's well-executed finish coming late on for City, just prior to Peter Olayinka wrapping up Dukla's win.
City didn't get going in a first half where their opponents' match sharpness told; Dukla had played seven matches prior to this one in the summer, and they were sharper in most areas.
Josh Murphy fashioned the Canaries best opportunity of the opening 45 when he took on his full-back but dragged his effort across Lukas Hrosso's goal and wide.
Hrosso was only challenged by a couple of efforts from range by Jacob Murphy, and the well-organised Czech outfit scored the opener on 28 minutes.
Towering forward Jean-David Beauguel crossed to the back post, where Marek Hanousek hooked the ball over Declan Rudd for Cajic, who finished the job with a diving header into the empty net.
Ben Godfrey came on at right-back at the break for Louis Thompson, and City restarted with promise as Alex Tettey, Graham Dorrans and James Maddison saw more of the ball.
Maddison whipped an effort over the angle of post and bar on the hour mark, and a cluster of Dukla changes offer the settled City team more opportunity to seize the initiative.
Their task was made all the more difficult, however, on 66 minutes when Nestor utilised the hold-up play of Beauguel with a one-two before setting himself for a smart finish from 20 yards.
That took the sting out of City's efforts, and although Murphy raised hopes of avoiding defeat with an 88th-minute goal, Dukla made sure of the victory when Olayinka nodded home a corner at the end.
Neil will reflect on a useful test against an organised side, with Rubin Kazan City's next opponents on Saturday.
