REPORT: PETERBOROUGH 0-3 CITY

16 July 2016

City see off League One opposition in extended friendly

A GOAL apiece for the Murphy twins helped the Canaries beat Peterborough United 3-0 in their 120-minute pre-season friendly at the ABAX Stadium.

Cameron Jerome's tap-in was sandwiched in between as Alex Neil's men backed up their opening win over Walsall a week ago with another victory in this unique, quartered match designed to give as many of Neil's squad game time as possible.

This pre-season game had an edge from the off, with City's first opportunity coming through Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who saw his goalward effort stopped by home 'keeper Mark Tyler.

Peterborough soon began to dictate the tempo, though, and John Ruddy had to be sharp to deny Jermaine Anderson just before the first stoppage on the half hour mark.

Good chances fell to Steven Naismith and Murphy at the beginning of the second quarter, but after spurning his first Murphy made no mistake with his second, lobbing Tyler with confidence from inside the box from Ryan Bennett's pass.

With both sides switching their elevens at the 60-minute interval, the contest took time to get going - City's side was a real mix of youth and experience, with the likes of Todd Cantwell and James Maddison supporting striker Cameron Jerome.

Openings were at a premium, with Murphy's goal still the difference as the final drinks break was taken and the teams took to the field for the final half an hour.

Jacob Murphy was a lively presence on the right-flank, fashioning a chance that Jerome spurned from the edge of the area - but the frontman was to get his second goal of pre-season 13 minutes from the end.

Murphy was involved once more, stretching play down the right and forcing a parried save from Ben Alnwick, with Jerome following up and turning the rebound home.

There was still time for Murphy to join his twin on the scoresheet but he wouldn't have expected it to come from a header, the winger nodding home Maddison's corner much to his delight and probable surprise.
