City trio shine in group stage clash

WES Hoolahan marked his first appearance at a major international tournament in style by scoring in Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Sweden in Group E of Euro 2016 on Monday.

The midfielder met Seamus Coleman's cross on the volley to whip home in the opening minutes of the second half, converting confidently with a superb strike on his weaker right foot.

Hoolahan's goal underlined an impressive individual performance, with Robbie Brady also putting in a high-quality display against a Sweden team for whom Martin Olsson was a standout player.

Olsson's frequent forays forward were a trademark of Sweden's play, and they levelled 20 minutes from time when Ciaran Clark diverted Zlatan Ibrahimovic's cross into his own net.

It means bragging rights are shared among the City teammates, and both nations still harbour firm hopes of making the next stage of the competition ahead of their remaining group games against Italy and Belgium.
