EURO 2016 ROUND-UP: SATURDAY

25 June 2016

Kyle Lafferty plays 90 minutes in Northern Ireland defeat

NORTHERN Ireland were eliminated from Euro 2016 at the second round stage on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat to Wales in Paris.

A tense first half offered few clear opportunities for either side, but the match gradually started to liven up during the second period.

Wales' winner came in the 75th minute when Gareth Bale's low cross was inadvertently turned into his own by Gareth McAuley.

City's Kyle Lafferty played the full match - his second start of the tournament - and provided a regular outlet for his side in attack.

However, Northern Ireland were unable to find the result needed to book their place in the quarter-finals, with Wales progressing to face either Belgium or Hungary.
