Kyle Lafferty an unused substitute for Northern Ireland

NORTHERN Ireland enjoyed a famous night on Thursday as second half goals from Gareth McAuley and Niall McGinn secured a deserved 2-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2016.

City striker Kyle Lafferty was an unused substitute as a determined performance earned a potentially invaluable victory in the Green and Whites' quest to reach the knock-out stages.

With all teams in Group C having now played twice, Michael O'Neill's side sit in third with three points; behind Germany and Poland who have four apiece.

They now go into their final group game knowing a shock win over the world champions next week would see them reach the last 16, while their hopes are also boosted by the competition's format.

The four best third-placed finishers across all six groups will progress, and avoiding defeating in Paris could yet prove enough for Northern Ireland to take one of those berths.
