Irish eyes smile in France

NORWICH City's Republic of Ireland pair Robbie Brady and Wes Hoolahan played a starring role on Wednesday in a famous night for their country at Euro 2016.

Needing a win against Italy to progress to the last 16, they triumphed 1-0 thanks to Brady's late header - perfectly buried after being exquisitely created by substitute Hoolahan.

Ireland were fully deserving of victory after a superb performance, capped in dramatic circumstances, and will now face hosts France for a place in the quarter-finals.

Brady in particular was outstanding for Martin O'Neill's side, while Hoolahan's impact off the bench had a direct bearing on creating the much-needed breakthrough.

Elsewhere, there was less fortune for City's Martin Olsson, who saw his tournament come to an end.

Also needing a win in their final game of Group E, Sweden were eliminated following a 1-0 defeat to Belgium.
