Lafferty, Odjidja and Andreu all featured

NORWICH City's Under-21s feature three senior players in the shape of Vadis Odjidja Ofoe, Kyle Lafferty and Tony Andreu as they fell to a late 1-2 defeat to Manchester City at Carrow Road on Friday night.

Remi Matthews was called into action within the opening ten minutes as he raced out to smother Isaac Buckley-Rickett's effort at close range after the ball had found its way to the Canaries' back post.

Buckley-Ricketts was causing City problems with his pace and direct running, but a superb last-ditch Michee Efete lunge prevented the winger from opening the scoring on nineteen minutes.

It would be Andreu who would go closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, however, as his fierce drive from the edge of the area rattled Angus Gunn's crossbar.

The ex-Canary stopper would be called into action again shortly after the restart as he got down quickly to deny Kyle Lafferty's tame effort.

Manchester City broke through City's resolve when a lofted corner was not dealt with by Matthews, and Rodney Kongolo had the simplest of tasks to tap the ball into an empty net at the back post.

Glenn Middleton attempted to draw the hosts back level immediately as his long-range effort drew a save from Gunn.

The hosts would equalise soon after, with a neat passage of play ending with Andreu's cool flick and Lafferty rifling the ball home from close range.

Ben Godfrey then went close with a shot that had Gunn sprawing across the face of goal, but he watched the ball sail past the wrong side of the post.

A surging run and low cross from David Faupala almost ended with the ball in Matthews' net, but the City goalkeeper was alert to smartly deny Buckley-Ricketts' effort.

There was to be a late sting for City with the clock ticking down, as the visitors were awarded a penalty and Sinan Bytyqi converted from the spot to earn the Citizens the three points.
