FA YOUTH CUP: WATFORD 1-5 CITY

29 November 2016

Young Canaries impress at Vicarage Road

NORWICH City's Under-18s produced a superb display on Tuesday evening as they booked their place in Round Four of the FA Youth Cup with a fine 5-1 win away to Watford.

A dominant opening half-hour saw David Wright's youngsters race into a three-goal lead, setting them up perfectly for the remainder of the Vicarage Road contest.

City were out of the traps at pace from the off, with Callum Ellesley twice threatening either side of Benny Ashley-Seal diverting Glenn Middleton's cut-back narrowly wide.

Middleton then tried his luck himself, only being denied by a smart stop from Hornets goalkeeper Andrew Thomas as the visitors poured forward in numbers at every opportunity.

They eventually got the breakthrough their start deserved as the midway point of the first half neared, captain Owen Wallis lashing home confidently when the ball fell his way just inside the area.

Within two minutes, they doubled their advantage; Ashley-Seal being fouled in the box before stepping up to emphatically fire the resultant penalty into the roof of the net.

The Canaries were rampant and soon registered a third when Watford's Treon Johnson inadvertently diverted into his own goal under pressure when the Hornets failed to clear a corner sufficiently.

They would maintain that lead into the second half, displaying resilience in defence as determined blocks from first Wallis then Bilal Kamal kept the hosts off the scoresheet.

That theme continued after the break, the away side again shutting out their opponents whenever a sight of goal presented itself while also maintaining their threat on the counter-attack.

Although City would have to wait, they added two more goals to their tally before the night was out as two players stepped off the substitutes bench to stamp their mark on the game.

First, Anthony Spyrou latched onto Kamal's precise pass to finish calmly on 79 minutes ahead of Devonte Aransibia rolling home via the post just moments later having met a cut-back from the right.

Marian Huja struck a late consolation for Watford but the young Canaries ultimately booked their place in the next round of the competition with ease.
