Unlucky Canaries suffer Carrow Road defeat

CITY Under-23s' run of good form was halted by a 2-0 defeat to Swansea City in their Premier League 2 meeting at Carrow Road.

Dmitri Halajko's Canaries got off to a poor start as the visitors from South Wales went in front after just three minutes, Ben Godfrey's inadvertently diverting Alex Samuel's cross into his own net after the winger's burst into the box.

Carlton Morris and Diallang Jaiyesimi drew saves from Gregor Zabret as City reacted positively to going behind, but Swansea carried a significant threat with their pace on the counter-attack.

Five minutes before half-time, Morris set up Ebou Adams with a weighted through ball but the midfielder screwed his shot across goal and wide of Zabret's post.

Paul Jones kept out Tyler Reid's low effort soon after the interval but the Canaries' goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Botti Biabi's penalty on 55 minutes, the Swansea striker slotting home after Godfrey had tripped Daniel James in the area.

Morris found Zabret his equal once again, and when his excellent header from captain Ray Grant's cross slid wide of the post on 74 minutes, it felt like it wasn't going to be City's night.

Ryan Blair whipped a Swansea free-kick past Jones' post and Biabi should have made doubly certain of the win four minutes from the end but chipped his shot over the bar when unmarked in the box.

Jones then denied the lively James, but despite their missed opportunities late on the Swans had done enough to secure the win.
