CHECKATRADE TROPHY: BARNET 0-5 CITY

4 October 2016

City advance to the knockout stages after 5-0 win

A NORWICH City Development side progressed into the knockout stages of the Checkatrade Trophy thanks to a hat-trick from Josh Murphy, plus goals from Sergi Canos and Nelson Oliveira.

The young Canaries had their first clearcut chance in the 15th minute when Alex Pritchard's ball found Murphy, who was beyond the Barnet defence but shot straight into the hands of Josh Vickers.

After 31 minutes, the Bees' captain Bondz N'Gala received a straight red card after a challenge from behind on Murphy, with the home manager Martin Allen clearly unhappy with the decision.

Murphy was in behind the Barnet defence again after getting on the end of Ray Grant's long ball, but his shot hit the side netting.

Barnet were holding their own however - Ryan Watson's corner from the right found the head of Nana Kyei, but Paul Jones held the ball comfortably.

In the 45th minute, City finally found the goal that they'd been searching for as Grant played in Murphy who ran down the left flank, cut inside and finished in the opposite corner.

The Bees changed their shape after the break, but Norwich having the extra man was a clear advantage.

Barnet's intense passing in the 54th minute led to a chance for Ryan Watson, who lobbed Jones, but was denied by a superb off-the-line clearance by Ben Godfrey.

Just one minute later the second goal of the game came when Oliveira's poke past the Barnet defence found Murphy, who slotted it through the legs of the Bees 'keeper.

12 minutes later Oliveira's chest down was met by Canos, whose shot took a big deflection over Vickers to put City three goals up.

78 minutes in, Pritchard gave the ball to Oliveira, who set himself for an unbelievable strike which hit the bar and ended up in the back of the net, putting City four goals up.

Great passing between Carlton Morris and Pritchard was topped off by a tidy finish from Murphy, completing his hat-trick, one minute from the final whistle.

After a dominant second half, City went home with another win in the Checkatrade Trophy, and advance into the knockout stages.
