Lafferty fires brace in Northern Ireland win
NORTHERN Ireland picked up their first win of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday, with two City players featuring in their 4-0 victory over San Marino.Goalkeeper Michael McGovern played the full match while Kyle Lafferty scored twice after being introduced as a second half substitute in their Group C meeting at Windsor Park.
Michael O'Neill's side were labouring to victory against their ten-man visitors, with Steven Davis' penalty the sole difference between the two teams before Jamie Ward and Lafferty (2) struck inside the final eleven minutes.
In Group F, Scotland needed a late James McArthur equaliser to earn a point on home soil against Lithuania. Our own Russell Martin took on the captain's armband after Darren Fletcher was withdrawn at half-time.
Martin completed the 90 minutes, but it took McArthur's 89th-minute goal to bring the Scots level following Fiodor Cernych's strike.
Earlier in the day Alex Tettey was an unused substitute for Norway, who suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Azerbaijan in Baku.
