Wins for Charlton and Dundee United

DECLAN Rudd kept a clean sheet on Saturday as Charlton Athletic edged to a 1-0 success over Chesterfield in Sky Bet League One.

Both sides hit the woodwork in a tight game, ahead of substitute Lee Novak securing victory for the Addicks late on by heading home Ricky Holmes' cross.

Victory lifts Charlton up to 14th in the table, four points off a play-off place with a game in hand.

In Scotland, Aberdeen were narrowly beaten by Premiership leaders Celtic, who secured a 1-0 triumph at Pittodrie.

Tom Rogic's goal midway through the first half proved the difference, taking the Glasgow outfits nine points clear at the top of the division.

James Maddison was introduced off the bench during the second period to add a spark for the hosts, but they were unable to find a leveller.

A level further down, Dundee United remained within three points of Scottish Championship leaders Hibernian with a 1-0 win at home to Falkirk.

Tony Andreu went close twice during the game, being denied on both occasions by smart saves from Falkirk goalkeeper Danny Rogers.

However, United's winner eventually came eight minutes from time when defender Mark Durnan netted from close-range to give his side all three points.

Harry Toffolo and Remi Matthews missed out for Scunthorpe United and Hamilton Academical respectively, with the latter set to sidelines for some time with a shoulder injury.

In their absence, Scunthorpe beat Swindon Town 4-1 to stay top of Sky Bet League One, while Hamilton went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.
