Norwich swimmer set to defend Paralympic title
COMMUNITY Sports Foundation Ambassador Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE will be representing Paralympics GB at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which begin on Wednesday, September 7.
The 20-year-old City of Norwich Club swimming member, who has learning difficulties, will be competing in a number of swimming disciplines, including the S14 100m Backstroke, S14 200m Individual Medley and S14 200m Freestyle.
She will be defending a Paralympic title in the latter event, having memorably won gold with a record time of 2:12.63 at the 2012 Games in London - at the age of just 16.
That success has since been followed up by a world championship title in the S14 100m Backstroke at Glasgow last year.
Glasgow was also where her place at Rio 2016 was confirmed, qualifying at the British Para-Swimming International meet with a time of 2:05.63 in the women’s S14 200m Freestyle final.
CSF Director Ian Thornton said he wished the Norfolk star, who has been supported by funds raised through the Foundation, every success in the upcoming competition.
"The opportunity to compete at this level is something every athlete strives for. Jessica-Jane has overcome significant personal challenges to take her place beside the best in the world and she is as an inspiration to us all.
"We will all be watching at home and cheering her on every step of the way."
