Connections between City and their midweek opponents

ONE of the most popular figures to have represented both Norwich City and Newcastle United is Ruel Fox, who progressed through the Canaries' youth system during the late 1980s.

Fox gradually became a mainstay, featuring as City famously reached the last 16 of the 1993-94 UEFA Cup with victory over Bayern Munich.

The winger then moved to United in February 1994, scoring ten league goals in the subsequent campaign ahead of joining Tottenham Hotspur in October 1995.

Another player to have begun their career with Norwich before finding their way to Tyneside is Craig Bellamy, who debuted for City in 1997.

After 84 league appearances in yellow and green, during which he scored 32 times, the Cardiff-born forward switched to Coventry City for the 2000-01 season before transferring to Newcastle.

Bellamy spent four years with the Magpies, finding the net on 43 occasions in 128 appearances across all competitions.

Both clubs have been managed by Chris Hughton, who was in charge of Newcastle between 2009 and 2010 and in the dugout with the Canaries from 2012 to 2014.

During his time in Norfolk, Hughton signed current City defender Sebastien Bassong; the Cameroon international joining from Tottenham in 2012 having previously been at Newcastle.

The now 57-year-old also brought Jonas Gutierrez to Carrow Road on a loan deal during the 2013-14 season, with the Argentine being a player Hughton had managed before while on Tyneside.
