INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP: SUNDAY

4 September 2016

European World Cup qualifying gets underway

FOUR City players featured in World Cup qualfying on Sunday night as the battle for Europe's nations to earn coveted spots at Russia 2018 began.

Northern Ireland got off to a solid start in Group C as they held Czech Republic to a 0-0 draw in Prague. Michael McGovern played in goal, while Kyle Lafferty completed 59 minutes for Michael O'Neill's side.

In the same group, Alex Tettey's Norway found defending champions Germany in dangerous form as Thomas Muller struck twice in the visitors' comfortable 3-0 win in Oslo.

Scotland, drawn in Group F alongside England, kickstarted their campaign with a 5-1 win over nine-man Malta, with former Canary Robert Snodgrass firing a hat-trick.

City captain Russell Martin came through 90 minutes at the Ta'Qali Stadium, but Steven Naismith was an unused substitute.

Further afield, it was a good night's work for Youssouf Mulumbu's Democratic Republic of Congo, who secured passage to next year's Africa Cup of Nations with a straightforward 4-1 victory over closest rivals Central African Republic.

Mulumbu started as DR Congo topped Group B with 15 points from their six group matches after the win in Kinshasa.
