Young Canaries edged out at Ewood Park

NORWICH City Under-23 were narrowly beaten at Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League 2 on Monday night, eventually going down 2-0 despite a spirited display.

Goals late in either half from Lewis Mansell and Connor Mahoney proved the difference, although the visitors enjoying a number of impressive spells across the evening.

Dmitri Halajko named a youthful squad for the trip to Ewood Park, with Ben Godfrey the only player involved to have represented City's first team.

Meanwhile former City winger Elliott Bennett was included in Rovers' XI as he returned from an injury suffered on the opening day of the season, ironically against Norwich's senior side.

The Canaries began brightly and had the better of the early opportunities, going close through Glenn Middleton's low drive before Joe Crowe saw his header tipped over the crossbar.

A further opportunity fell the way of Benny Ashley-Seal after fine work from Ebou Adams, but the frontman lost his footing at the vital moment and sent his effort wide.

Rovers gradually grew into the contest as the lively Bennett began to cause problems, none more so than when he slammed substitute Ryan Nyambe's cutback off the crossbar on 26 minutes.

Having steadily asserted themselves onto the game, Blackburn were able to take a 1-0 lead into the break when Mansell rose highest in the 43rd minute to head home Mahoney's cross.

City pushed for a leveller in the second period, with Adams firing wide before Diallang Jaiyesimi found the side-netting on the hour-mark.

They continued to press for the remainder of the game, only for Mahoney's penalty four minutes from time to ultimately take the game beyond Halajko's youngsters.
