In Focus: Charlton Athletic

21 August 2017

Norwich City are in second round Carabao Cup action on Tuesday evening when they welcome Sky Bet League One side Charlton Athletic to Carrow Road.

The two sides met last month in a pre-season friendly and City got the better of their opponents on that occasion. Here’s our guide for the visit on the south Londoners.

Summer signings
Charlton boss Karl Robinson has not been able to spend as much as he may have liked in this transfer window, but he’s still managed to bring in six new faces.

In terms of loan deals, promising Chelsea youngster Jay Dasilva decided to re-join the Addicks after a successful spell with the club in the second part of last season.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos has also joined on a season-long loan deal from Bolton Wanderers.

Charlton also made a move for two players from one of their potential promotion rivals – Mark Marshall and Billy Clarke (pictured below) both signed from Bradford City.

Marshall and Clarke played key roles as the Bantams made the Sky Bet League One play-off final last season and Robinson will hope they bring that experience of going so close to promotion into their time at The Valley.

The Addicks have also signed Ben Reeves, on a free transfer from Robinson’s former club MK Dons, and Tarique Fosu-Henry from Reading.

Previous meeting
City and Charlton have met 81 times in club football with the most memorable of recent years being the League One clash back in 2010.

Under Paul Lambert, City had been top of the league for most of the season and needed a victory at The Valley to secure a return to the Championship at the first attempt.

With a team featuring the likes of Michael Spillane, Stephen Hughes and Oli Johnson, City managed to overcome a Charlton side who had play-off hopes of their own, thanks to Michael Nelson’s first half header (pictured below). The Canaries went on to win the league and gain promotion to the Premier League the following season.

Form guide
Charlton have made a positive start to their first full season under Robinson. They kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, despite having Lee Novak sent off.

Then, they made it through to the second round of the cup after a 2-1 win over Exeter City but followed that with defeat away at newly-promoted Plymouth Argyle.

However, after an impressive 4-1 victory over Northampton Town on Saturday, The Addicks will go into the cup match on a high.

Goals from Josh Magennis and Ricky Holmes gave Charlton a two-goal cushion but Northampton pulled one back with ten minutes to play through Marc Richards.

However, two late goals from Jake Forster-Caskey ensured Charlton stayed just inside the play-offs going into the next league fixture.
